I thought she was already dead and buried with Reagan.

Her dying is of no interest to me. I just wish she'd never been born.

Well, you didn't have to live through the mayhem she inflicted on the UK, whilst purveying her political dogma.

I'm with snori on this, 100%.

However, the crowd we have in at the moment make her look tame by comparison. It's the same political dogma (throw people out of work and look after your rich chums and then claim that you're "fixing" the economy), but taken to a new extreme.

Nice one BD - thanks for the link.

EC has always been spot on with his political comment in my opinion:

BTW, Clive Langer, who co-wrote 'Shipbuilding' with EC, was the original 'Cliff Hanger' long before Brent Mydland. He used the name when he was with the Liverpool band Deaf School in the mid 1970's -

Thanks. I like Billy Bragg's comment:

"This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing; of why domestic growth is driven by credit, not by real incomes; of why tax-payers are forced to top up wages; of why a spiteful government seeks to penalise the poor for having an extra bedroom; of why Rupert Murdoch became so powerful; of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society.

"Raising a glass to the death of an infirm old lady changes none of this. The only real antidote to cynicism is activism. Don't celebrate -- organise!"

Robert Wyatt's version of Shipbuilding is in this link:

Maybe Arthur Scargill will follow her and they can battle it out for supremacy over some satanic shitheap. Demagogues of whatever political persuasion are to be deplored.

I agree that Scargill was not much better.

The damage wreaked by Thatcher wasn't just limited to the miners' strike though, it went far beyond destroying the mining industry.

I would argue that her (and Reagan's) actions back then put the bankers in the position of power that they are in today. And we all know where that led us.

I'm very surprised there hasn't been an outpouring of support from the Nixon-ite wing of the forum, after all there must have been something nice to be said about her, even though actions created by her and her political allies caused strife, death and misery for millions.Oddly enough an alarming percentage of our forumites seemed pleased or at least not outraged at the job our political "representatives" are doing in our name, but I can't say I'm aware of what the European/American breakdown as far as that goes is,although I would lean in the direction that the European faction falls more in line with unsatisfied to my unbridled hatred and kill them all viewpoint.

Something nice to be said about her? Yeah, good bye and good riddance.

She did more damage to the UK since anyone or anything since the Luftwaffe.

As for Scargill, if he'd had the balls to have a vote for the miner's strike he'd have won the ballot, the strike would have been solid and who knows how things would have turned out.

Anyway, as someone once said Rejoice!

I think you missed the sarcasm in my something nice to be said for her comment,a while ago we had a back and forth on Nixon and some people felt he was just dandy and I called for him to exhumed and shit on,well not in so many words but you get my drift.

Yes, it's parallel to Reagan here--if you believe that tax reduction works (for economic growth/job generation), welfare states and big gubbermints are bad, and the cold war was won by RR & MT, blah, blah, blah, then yup, the old gal and movie star did it all...

I think that there are real similarities to the myths surrounding the two, and their approaches. MT's quote that all of her for. policy stemmed from avoiding the mistakes made with Adolph always spoke volumes (a patent sound bite if there ever was one for her generation of course).

Sadly Scargill was the best present anyone could have given Thatcher. It's a shame Mick McGahey wasn't NUM leader at the time. He would have found out how much coal was stockpiled, waited for a better time and won a ballot.

The media coverage here has only served to remind me that we haven't had a competent leader in this Country since Attlee. (That's from reading history, not first hand experience.)

"Sadly Scargill was the best present anyone could have given Thatcher"

Very true. I'd add Argentina's General Galtieri and the IRA as well. She was on the way out in 1982 just before the Falklands invasion; and only the hardest hearts could fail to pity those maimed and murdered in Brighton's Grand Hotel by the provo bombers.

Thatcher was a monster. The greater the cult surrounding her became, the more ashamed I was to be British.

Me too, bluedevil, Elvis Costello's "Tramp The Dirt Down" is a classic. And if anyone hasn't yet heard "Shipbuilding" I urge you to click on bd's link elsewhere in this thread. Chicken-skin music, as Ry would say.
